Urgent intervention
at the Moscosi bridge

Program of interventions for the restoration of roads in the areas affected by the 2016 earthquake

Description of the intervention

The bridge where an intervention was executed, connects the provincial road 26 with the Moscosi hamlet in the municipality of Cingoli. Due to an important crack state found on the entire bridge and, above all, in correspondence with pillar no. 10 and a series of seismic shocks following the exceptional seismic event of 24/08/2016, the work was closed to circulation with consequent shift of roads.

The construction of the work is dated 1990. The road bridge consists of 14 spans with a centre to centre distance of 31.6 m (except for the first and last span of 30.6 m) resting on 13 pillars in reinforced concrete, at full circular section with variable height. The deck consists of 3 cistern beams in c.a.p. at 3.6 m centre distance with 1.8 m height, 3.09 m higher width, 0.85 m lower width and 0.14 m core thickness. The deck slab has a thickness of 0.2 m, a total width of 10.7 m and a track of 8.6 m.

The intervention involved the supplies and processes necessary for the safety and seismic adjustment of the bridge in Moscosi; in detail:

  • Reinforcement of the shoulders with reinforced concrete walls and the widening of the gates for the installation of adequate expansion joints
  • The connection of the spans with reinforced concrete beams post-stretched with a solution similar to the chain
  • The replacement of existing supports with seismic insulators sliding on a curved surface
  • The lining of the pillar with steel lining and carbon fibre sheathing
  • The restoration of deteriorated concrete parts
  • Renovation of the road pavement
  • The replacement of road barriers

Pesaresi Giuseppe Spa has developed and implemented specialist works and technical solutions studied and improved, based on its experience and know-how gained.

1

Study on metal caissons

It developed the study relating to the metal caissons provided for the consolidation of the pillars in the riverbed pushed to the definition of the architectural ready for production once approved by the Works Management. The finishing treatment of the metal caissons will be white like the pillars of the bridge in order not to alter the aesthetic perception of the work as a whole.
2

Installation of steel linings

Specific solutions have been developed to be adopted for the installation of the steel linings of the pillars and the relative movement systems of the same, including the use of the pontoon and nautical support means. the various elements for the movement of the formwork with fittings to the lifting means have been designed, all to speed up the assembly operations of the caissons and in absolute safety, avoiding as much as possible the manual intervention of the operators.
3

Improvements and enhancement of the planned intervention

To complete and improve the works in the project, a series of substitute / additional improvements to the processes have been provided, in order to fully enhance the planned intervention. These replacement / additional improvements concern specific processes aimed at obtaining maximum overall effectiveness on the final result of the intervention on the work of art in terms of durability, safety and aesthetics and affect the whole deck in its overall development. Elements that have been the subject of proposals for improvement by the company: protection and restraint systems; the restoration of damaged pulvini concrete; water disposal system; protective waterproofing shoulders; beams diaphragms pulvini extrados sidewalks.
4

In order to ensure maximum safety conditions for operators, the use of suspended scaffolding was used to carry out the restoration of pillars and pulvini.
5

Improvement of safety and durability characteristics

In order to improve the safety and durability characteristics of the existing road pavement, the following activities were carried out: removal of the existing joints on all the pulvini restoring the heads of the deteriorated slabs; insertion of new underfloor joints on all pulvini; milling and subsequent laying on the entire deck and connecting ramps across the deck of a new wear mat such as SplittMastic Asphalt, thickness 3 cm.
6

Optimal insertion in the environment

In order to guarantee the maximum effectiveness of the intervention, in reference to the increase of the resistance, durability, overall aesthetics of the work of art and its optimal insertion in the naturalistic environment, the parapet on the sidewalk, the veil, and the road barriers edge of the bridge, all were made of corten steel.
7

Systems to contain emissions into the environment

During the course of the works, systems were adopted to reduce and contain releases to the environment, mainly those related to the contamination of the basin, from any loss of oils and fuels from marine vessels and from the fall of hydro-demolished material.
